The cotton poplin oxford is one of those pieces that’s wonderfully classic in an East Coast/Ralph Lauren/prep school kinda way, but it’s not really something we usually get excited about. This spring though, we’re having to rethink our stance, since fashion is currently determined to take the boredom out of the button-up.
Whether flipping shirts around and putting buttons down the shoulders, adding laces, ties, or twists down the front, or elongating the sleeves way past the fingertips, designers have come up with innumerable creative ways to deconstruct the staple piece. On the pricier end of the spectrum, J.W. Anderson is a master of the form—his new shirting collection for Net-a-Porter is right at the top of our wish lists—but there are tons of affordable options out there too if you want to try out the trend without spending a ton.
Styling classic button-ups in unconventional ways has been a favorite hobby of bloggers and street style stars for at least a few seasons now (see: backwards, off-the-shoulder, and under a bustier), but buying one that’s already out-of-the-ordinary takes the guesswork out of the equation.
